Acquiring Citizenship in Uzbekistan

Changing citizenship is a significant step that often comes with changes in life, culture, and worldview. Uzbekistan, with its rich cultural heritage and hospitality, attracts more and more people from outside. The general process of becoming a citizen of the Republic of Uzbekistan applies to citizens of foreign countries and stateless individuals under specific conditions, namely if the person:

  • has formally renounced citizenship of a foreign state;
  • has continuously resided in the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan for 5 years from the date of obtaining a permit for permanent residence (for stateless individuals) and until submitting an application for Uzbekistan citizenship;
  • has legitimate sources of livelihood;
  • commits to uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan;
  • possesses proficiency in the state language to the extent necessary for communication.

In this regard, residence in the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan is considered continuous if a stateless individual leaves the Republic of Uzbekistan for no more than 183 days within a year. If the applicant has at least one relative in the direct ascending line residing in the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan and being a citizen of the Republic of Uzbekistan, they are eligible for a simplified procedure for obtaining Uzbekistan citizenship. The received applications or statements regarding Republic of Uzbekistan citizenship matters are registered in the interdepartmental database on Republic of Uzbekistan citizenship matters called “E-Fuqaro”. A state fee of $55 is charged for processing these applications or statements for acquiring Republic of Uzbekistan citizenship. The applicant regarding Republic of Uzbekistan citizenship matters must provide an identity and citizenship document.

The review period for materials in each authorized body should not exceed one month, and the overall duration should not exceed one year from the date of submission of requirements regarding Republic of Uzbekistan citizenship matters in the “E-Fuqaro” interdepartmental database or the Consular Information System. Documents submitted by the applicant in a language other than the official language of the Republic of Uzbekistan are translated by the applicant into the official language. The total review period for the submitted materials for acquiring Republic of Uzbekistan citizenship should not exceed three months.
